Tableau Data Analyst

Purpose of Position/Summary: This Data Analyst position supports requests from agency program areas, partners, and outside organizations for the analysis of health datasets. The analyst serves as the primary analyst of the hospital discharge dataset. The position provides in-depth analysis of hospital inpatient and outpatient records to produce insights for agency leadership and produces quarterly and annual deliverables associated with the dataset. This analyst will support the development of new Tableau dashboards and assist with refreshing and updating existing Tableau dashboards maintained by the agency. Additionally, this position will work closely with the Director and other analysts to fulfill internal and external data requests using hospital discharge, birth, death, and BRFSS data. The analyst is also responsible for reviewing and editing data for publication in various reports.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Provide general or advanced data analysis of agency datasets as requested.
  • Produce quarterly and annual hospital discharge data deliverables (analytic datasets and reports)
  • Produce deliverables required to support the operation of the IDOH Statistics Explorer, as required
  • Design compelling visualizations including Tableau dashboards and assist others in the design process.
  • Work closely with the Indiana Hospital Association to improve hospital discharge data quality and ISDH interpretations.
  • Collaborate with the other ISDH program areas (e.g., Informatics, Hospital Associated Infections, and Trauma & Injury Prevention) to develop novel ways of using and reporting out hospital discharge data.
  • Complete data requests, as needed, using birth, death, hospital discharge, and BRFSS data
  • Adhere to HIPAA and other state statutes concerned with protecting data confidentiality and individual privacy.

Requirements:
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited university in biostatistics, mathematics, epidemiology, programming, or related field.
  • Specific and extensive knowledge of SAS programming.
  • Specific and extensive knowledge of Tableau.
  • Broad knowledge of ICD medical coding system preferred.
  • Broad knowledge of data analysis, analytics, or statistics preferred.
  • Ability to work in a team environment with multiple and fluid demands.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to maintain effective and professional working relationships with internal customers.
  • Ability to prioritize projects and address immediate analytical/programming needs as they arise.
