About the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ISBVI): The Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is one of the largest schools for the blind and visually impaired in the country, in terms of its student population. ISBVI's vision is to provide diverse and salient opportunities for students, educators, and families to access and benefit from its resources. The school is positioned to serve as a center of educational excellence and a broker of best practices research and training for educators, students, and families - which will have the effect of significantly improving the educational experiences and lives of children who are blind or have low vision. Salary: This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $34,216 ($17.54 per hour). Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience. There may be overtime opportunities for additional hours during staff absences. This is a 9-month position. Pay can be spread across 12 months. Role Overview: The Resident Assistant supports staff by facilitating the care and guidance of students and other youth during after-school and evening hours. You may be assigned to supervise students in dormitories, recreational facilities, dining facilities, and events under the supervision of the residential leader. This is a second-shift position. Hours are:

Sunday: 5:30pm -11:30pm

Monday - Thursday: 3:00pm - 11:30pm

Friday: Off

Saturday: Off

A Day in the Life: The essential functions of this role are:

Supervise students in dormitories, classrooms, lunchrooms, and off-campus trips under the supervision of the teacher or residential leader.

Supervise student housekeeping activities and inspect dorms and living areas for safety and cleanliness.

Prepare necessary materials as directed by the teacher and/or supervisor.

Assist with activities outside the classroom and/or dormitories.

Support discipline policy of the classroom/residential program resolving conflicts between students and assisting in monitoring behavior plans.

Assure that student hygiene, toileting, and safety needs are met.

Perform various duties providing for the guidance, care, training, development, and socialization of hearing and/or visually impaired, physically challenged or developmentally delayed students.

Follow emergency procedures for fire, storm, and tornado drills and warnings.

Promote the nine dimensions of student development, including cultural, intellectual, life planning, political, spiritual, physical, emotional, sexual, and social.

Coordinate programs and recreational activities for students and complete and document programming plans, paperwork, incidents, and student progress.

What You'll Need for Success: You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:

Must be at least 21 years of age.

Basic understanding of the characteristics needs and effective methods of guidance of students of varying ages at different stages of development and at different levels of mental ability.

Knowledge of state, federal, and agency rules, and regulations.

Ability to keep accurate records concerning the care of the students.

Ability to supervise students in dormitories, classrooms, and other on- and off-campus activities.

Effective communication skills.
