The Physics Division of Argonne National Laboratory is seeking to hire a technician within the Center for Accelerator Target Science (CATS). CATS is a national center for the development and fabrication of targets for nuclear physics research.We produce a broad array of techniques to provide stable and radioactive targets for the Argonne Tandem Linac Accelerator System (ATLAS) as well as the broader DOE-NP nuclear physics community. To meet these needs necessitates working with elements across the periodic table including handling radioactive materials and hazardous chemicals in controlled environments.In this role, you will assist in the operation and maintenance of the target laboratory under supervision of senior staff. Some responsibilities include:Provide targets and radioactive sources for ATLAS experiments and to the broader DOE-NP community

Maintain and operate target making equipment, analytical equipment, and radiation detectors

Help maintain CATS material and target inventories

Support CATS research and development efforts

May contribute to scientific literature and conferences

Position RequirementsBasic Qualifications:Good technical knowledge of Chemistry, Engineering, Physics or a related field.

Comprehensive skill in the use of basic laboratory equipment and techniques

High degree of manual dexterity for handling and manipulating delicate materials

Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

Strong interpersonal skills to interact effectively and tactfully with internal customers and to successfully develop effective working relationships

Ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork

To perform the essential functions of this position successful applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship, which is required to comply with federal regulations and contract.

Preferred Qualifications:B.S. or M.S. in Chemistry, Engineering, Physics, or a related field

Experience writing research reports and publications

Experience handling and working with radioactive materials

This role will be hired as a Support Technician II or Support Technician III. The level will be determined by the candidate’s level of education, experience, and skill.Support Technician II – This level of skill is typically attained through completion of an associate’s degree or equivalent or with 5 or more years of related experience.

Support Technician III – This level of skill is typically attained through completion of an associate’s degree or equivalent or with 7 or more years of related experience.
