DescriptionJOB DESCRIPTION:Assembles surgical instrument trays and pans and delivers sterilized items to the operating room. Assembles special procedure trays for such complex surgeries as open heart, transplant, major orthopedic surgeries, neurosurgical, laparoscopic, and spine surgeries.

Accountable for the care and handling of instruments and equipment in designated service line(s).

Responsible for standardization maintenance of all designated service line(s) instrument trays. Ensures designated instrument tray inventory completeness, maintenance, readiness for daily surgical cases.

Responsible for availability of loaner and consigned trays in designated service line for daily surgical schedule.

Uses computer to scan PIC tickets on instrument trays and case cart protocol. Responsible for designated case cart readiness for daily surgical schedule.

Properly operates cleaning and sterilization equipment such as washers, sterilizers, sonic cleaners and cart washers. Restocks prep areas with supplies and takes inventory of sterile instrument pans and trays.

May retrieve contaminated equipment, supplies, trays and instruments from patient care areas for cleaning and sterilization. May collect needles and sharps containers from Operating Room for proper disposal.

Monitors all sterilization equipment by testing and recording indicators. Assists in operating room and sterile processing training staff in the identification of surgical instruments and individual pans.

Delegates assignments and adjusts work flow to meet the most important needs.

Accountable for the care and handling of instruments and equipment.

Operates sterilization equipment for the proper sterilization of surgical instruments. Follows established sterilization policy and procedures.

Assists in evaluating various products, supplies and equipment pertinent to designated service line(s) instrument trays.

Coordinates semiannual tray review with service line leaders and physicians in the operating room.

Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the principles of sterile technique and infection control; practices appropriate procedures to maintain a sterile environment. Performs other related duties as required.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A high school diploma or equivalent.

Successful completion of a surgical technologist training program.

Certified as a surgical technologist or sterile processing technician required.

Two years surgical technologist experience requiredPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (Medium): 20-50 lbs.; 0-33% of the work day (occasionally); 11-25 lbs., 34-66% of the workday (frequently); 01-10 lbs., 67-100% of the workday (constantly); Lifting 50 lbs. max; Carrying of objects up to 25 lbs.; Occasional to frequent standing & walking, Occasional sitting, Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing), Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Factors affecting environment conditions may vary depending on the assigned work area and tasks. Environmental exposures include, but are not limited to: Blood-borne pathogen exposure Bio-hazardous waste Chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors Communicable diseases Electrical shock , Floor Surfaces, Hot/Cold Temperatures, Indoor/Outdoor conditions, Latex, Lighting, Shift work, Travel may be required.
