To support survivors and end domestic violence in San Luis Obispo County.

Purpose and Responsibility

Under the direction of the Housing Director and the Prevention and Education Manager, the Advocate is responsible for supporting and empowering clients by assessing needs and referring clients to appropriate community programs and services. The Advocate will also organize and lead Latinx support groups at Stand Strong. We are seeking a dedicated candidate who is compassionate, energetic, positive, and confidential. This position requires that the candidate will be fluent in English and Spanish and have excellent oral and written communication skills. This candidate takes pride in their work and is able to work independently as well as working closely, cooperatively and collaboratively with others to problem-solve and find creative solutions. They also have the ability to handle sensitive issues with discretion and confidentiality while having a strong work ethic and commitment to the organization’s mission.

Job Duties

Our advocates:

· Collaborate with each client to assess their needs and goals and provide appropriate support, including facilitating referrals for services as needed.

· Advocate for and with clients through written, verbal, and in-person communication with medical, government, and other systems.

· Support clients as possible in their attainment of educational, employment, and other goals.

· Maintain regular contact and follow-up with clients throughout their participation in various programs.

· Collaborate with agency programs such as our Safe House, Counseling, Latinx, Legal, and Children’s programs to link clients to resources and services.

· Develop, lead, and update safety and self-sufficiency plans and/or workshops with clients including: housing, job skills development, financial literacy/empowerment and other appropriate services.

· Outreach to community members including at tabling events, collaborative meetings and workshops.

· Collect, enter, and report data regularly. Maintain files and data according to Stand Strong’s confidentiality practices.

· Develop and lead Latinx program services to Latinx clients including weekly groups and monthly gatherings.

· Work with clients to assess needs related to housing through the CalOES Housing First grant.

· Provide immediate crisis counseling during office hours as needed, in person or over the telephone or video.

· Provide necessary referrals and complete appropriate paperwork for each client, including regularly entering data in client database.

· Participate in regular department, all-staff, and other meetings as requested by the immediate supervisor, Executive Director, and/or Associate Director.

· As needed, provide trauma-informed, survivor-centered services to clients both in person (assisting walk-ins, bringing clients to safe housing) or by answering the Stand Strong 24/7 Crisis & Information line.

· Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor, Associate Director, or Executive Director.

Qualifications

· Verbal and written fluency in both English and Spanish is required.

· Current California Driver’s License, personal and current automobile registration and vehicle insurance required.

· Must satisfactorily pass a background check (paid for by employer).

· Completion of California’s 40-hour DV training program (provided by Stand Strong) is required prior to working with clients.

· Two years of experience providing direct services and/or advocacy to survivors/victims of domestic violence or sexual assault, people who are economically disadvantaged or physically/mentally disabled, substance abuse/dual diagnosed individuals, the elderly, at-risk youth, or other vulnerable populations is preferred.

· Have a strong understanding of trauma-informed practices

· Ability to work flexible hours as required by program and staffing needs.

· Ability to work with clients of all ages and backgrounds who have experienced trauma

· Demonstrated cultural competency and awareness in dealing with diverse populations

· Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google programs, and/or similar programs

· Ability to use computers, facsimiles, and telephones

· Strong organizational and prioritizing skills

· Some amount of stooping, kneeling, bending, lifting, walking, carrying, and other movements may be required. The employee will be required to perform these movements without risk of injury to themselves or others, or to demonstrate how they can perform the essential functions listed above.
