Animal Technician

Job Summary

The Animal Technician (AT) is responsible for providing support to users of the mouse facility, including basic facility maintenance and husbandry within gnotobiotic isolators, such as monitoring food, water, and bedding conditions, monitoring stocks of consumables and reordering in a timely manner, temperature/humidity checks, and maintaining detailed records of tasks performed. The AT will be comfortable performing mouse health checks and interacting with veterinary and facilities staff as necessary.

The successful candidate will also have the ability to perform advanced experimental techniques as needed to help to Core users as they plan and execute experiments (for example, the AT may administer experimental agents via oral, i.p., or subcutaneous routes, and follow up with experimental disease scoring and tracking, dissection and processing of tissues, or other techniques deemed experimentally necessary on behalf of Core users). Laboratory techniques will be employed to monitor sterility of our germ-free mouse colonies, including microbial culture and gram staining, with the possibility of learning/performing other molecular techniques, such as DNA extraction and genotyping.

Required Qualifications
  • Graduation from high school/GED, completion of training equivalent to the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician certification of the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS), and 1 year of animal care experience; or high school graduation and 2 years of animal care experience with rodents; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position
  • Practical knowledge of lab safety and the ability to follow protocols closely
  • Animal handling experience in a research or veterinary setting (rodents preferred)
  • Basic computer skills and excellent communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Detail oriented and capable of working independently
  • Evidence of precise communication skills and record keeping
  • Flexibility to work occasional variable hours, weekends as deemed experimentally necessary
  • Desire to learn new skill sets and contribute to the problem-solving nature of our facility
  • Willingness to learn new skills as needed
Note: Physical/health screening required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent degree)
  • Mouse skills including: handling, restraint, oral gavage, intraperitoneal injection, breeding (plug and pregnancy checks, determining age and sex of litters)
  • Lab skills including the ability to prepare, perform, and interpret the following assays: aerobic and anaerobic cultures, DNA extraction, qPCR, standard PCR, agarose gel electrophoresis, genotyping, gram stain
  • Prior work in an AAALAC accredited animal facility
  • Prior work in gnotobiotics, including the ability to prepare supply cylinders and introduce supplies into isolators with sterile technique
License/Certification

Completion of training equivalent to the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician certification of the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS); or an equivalent combination, see above
