Summary:

First Step Communities (FSC) is a Sacramento non-profit with the mission to create interim housing and emergency shelter for people experiencing homelessness. FSC has multiple CSA openings within their shelter and Cabin Campus.

Working as part of a team, CSAs will monitor and direct the clients in all areas of the campus. They may be assigned to the front desk, security monitoring or maintenance and will be cross-trained. CSAs are responsible for keeping safety watch, day and night, and performing conflict resolution should issues arise. The FSC shelter is for adults 18 and over and the CSA staff will work mainly in the services building next to the shelter. The Cabin Campus (The Grove) is a 24/7 site housing people ages 18-24 in individual cabins. Both sites have opportunities for advancement if a staff member is interested.

Work Schedule: Full and part-time shifts available:

FSC Shelter:

Front Desk – Monday to Friday 8am-4:30pm (Full-time with benefits)

Front Desk – Weekends 1:30pm-10pm

Security – Weekends 1:30pm-10pm

Transition-aged Youth Cabins Campus:

Weekend Day 8am-4:30pm

Weekend Swing 4pm-12:30am

(At this location front desk, security, and maintenance/cleaning tasks are shared amongst staff)

Duties and Responsibilities: include the following. Specific duties may vary based on the shift. Other duties may be assigned.

● Monitors and facilitates the transition of guests from the shelter/cabins to dining (Grove location only), counseling, meeting and/or classroom areas.

● Keeps safety watch day and night and leads conflict resolution should issues requiring intervention arise.

● Assists guests when needed.

● Escalates to Management’s attention any observed or suspected abuse and/or neglect of children, disabled individuals, dependent adults and elder/senior citizens.

● Collects laundry items, helps access stored possessions (if any) and processes their exit from the facility as required (Grove location only).

● Helps clients deposit and collects cell phones for charge (North A location only).

● Performs monitoring of video security systems as assigned, escalates concerns as required.

● Performs facility cleaning and maintenance.

● Regular, predictable attendance is required.

● Ability to get along and work effectively with others.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience: High school diploma and one to three months related experience and/or training. Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or a related field is preferred.

Other Skills and Abilities:

● Understanding of the homeless population and their unique needs.

● Strong verbal communication and listening skills.

● Ability to exercise extreme patience.

● Must be comfortable working with people and flexible in unpredictable environments.

● Ability to think quickly and respond calmly to stressful/ emergency situations.

Pay Rate: $15 per hour
