Maxar is currently seeking a Director of Engineering for our robotics systems and products to join our team in Pasadena, CA. This is a leadership position reporting to the GM of Maxar Robotics. Maxar Robotics creates robotic arms, motors and actuators for a variety of space applications including on-orbit servicing and refueling of spacecraft, planetary landers, and other applications. The Director of Engineering leads a team that develops new products or product enhancements to support customer requirements. He/she also provides engineering expertise to other departments where needed and is also responsible for all business reporting data and metrics for managing/tracking program performance.

The duties and responsibilities:
  • Support the general manager (GM) in the development and execution of the Robotics strategy.
  • Support the general manager in the execution of business backlog.
  • Lead, mentor, train, and support a team of multi-discipline engineers responsible for the design, analysis, and verification of robotic systems
  • Manage resources to meet program execution objections within cost, schedule and technical performance expectations
  • Manage IRAD development efforts to ensure objectives are being met on schedule and budget.
  • Work effectively to supervise multiple program teams
  • Provide senior technical oversight to ensure the expected quality, rigor, and discipline of engineering is maintained
  • Provide leadership to improve and/or transform engineering processes to keep Maxar on the leading edge of aerospace development approaches and standards.
  • Ensure development teams properly identify technical risks and opportunities, appropriate risk mitigation and action plans are put in place, and risks are retired to meet programmatic timelines.
  • Assess staffing needs based on current and future projects as well as manage the technical performance of that staff.
  • Provide engineer resources to support new business development
  • Actively consult with Program Management, Manufacturing/Operations leadership, and technical leaders in other organizations, to ensure all stakeholders are represented in key decisions
  • Provide senior leadership in activities that ensure the organization continues to be a 'learning organization'.
  • Plan, develop, and maintain engineering standards, engineering best practices, and engineering procedures.
  • Ensure engineering processes, products, and personnel training meets all AS9100 quality management systems (QMS) standards.
  • Ensure that engineering staff is right-sized in terms of numbers and skills.
  • Lead the recruiting, interviewing, and hiring processes for organization
  • Develop, maintain, and execute the engineering department budgets
  • Develop proposal costing inputs
  • Ensure all tool and systems are in place to meet the demand of future programs.
  • Report on engineering department performance and is responsible for meeting robotics KPI's and OKR's.

Minimum Required Qualifications:
  • Must be a US Citizen
  • Bachelor degree in Physics, Engineering, or equivalent technical degree required.
  • 12+ years of engineering experience in an Aerospace engineering discipline (systems engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or other relevant area)
  • 3+ years experience in managing engineers
  • Demonstrated expertise in conducting trade studies that optimize technical performance, mass, power, thermal, cost, schedule, and risks to meet system need
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and elevate the quality of engineering within a program or larger team.
  • Strong team building skills; demonstrated ability to effectively mentor and train more junior personnel
  • Broad technical understanding of space markets segments as they apply to robotics
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with superior customer relationship building ability, and business acumen
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Able to travel for periods of 2- 5 days on an occasional basis

Desired Qualifications:
  • Master degree or higher in Physics, Engineering, Business Administration, or equivalent.
  • Active or recent TS/SCI security clearance
  • Knowledge of USG space architectures, missions, systems, requirements, and acquisition methods required and be able to strategize unique solutions.
  • Working familiarity with applicable aerospace industry standards and best practices (Mil, NASA, ESA, AIAA, IEEE, etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience in test and verification processes.
