The purpose of this job description is to define the general character and scope of responsibilities for persons occupying this position. It is not intended to describe or list every duty or task.
DEFINITION
Under the administrative direction of the Board of Directors, the Director is responsible for the efficient and effective implementation of Board goals and policies; maintain an effective relationship with and is responsive to the Board, serves as the administrative manager for the Ferndale Children’s Center. S/he is responsible for recruiting, leading, supervising and evaluating staff and programs; serves as liaison between teachers and staff and the Board of Directors and manages the day-to-day operations of the Center.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Director is a full time, experienced-level position. The work is performed under the administrative direction of the Board of Directors, but the highest level of latitude is granted for the exercise of independent judgement and initiative. Work is typically performed in a variety of environments such as an office setting, indoor recreation facilities, and outdoors, including City parks, local field trips, and others. Outdoor activities may involve work in inclement weather.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
May be required to maintain a valid California Driver’s License throughout employment.
First Aid and CPR certified or eligible for certification within 6 months of hire.
Must have at minimum a High School Diploma or G.E.D. completion with passing grades.
Must to have at miminum 15 units at an accredited Comminity College or University.
3 units at minimum of administration or staff relations.
12 of the units must be Early Childhood Education, human growth and development and or program
curriculum based.
Must have at least 4 years of teaching experience in a licensed child care center or equivalent
group child care program.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Direct all matters related to the administration of the Center
Communicate with State and local regulatory agencies:
Define policies, educational philosophy and goals for staff, parents and visitors;
Manage the fiscal operations of the Center, including budgeting, monitoring, record keeping, and reporting;
Plan and implement, with staff and parents, fundraising goals and events;
Recruit, train and evaluate all Center staff;
Provide leadership in meeting the diverse cultural and linguistic needs of all children and families,
actively demonstrating a strong commitment to multicultural values in all Center programs and operations.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Incumbents are expected to have previous experience in a licensed early learning program and have at least four years of full-time teaching with children ages infant to 12 years of age or any combination of, and administrative experience. Individual should also hold a Child Development Permit. Any combination of training and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. First Aid and CPRtraining is desireable.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Safe work practices.
Philosophy, principles, and techniques of providing comprehensive early childhood education programs.
State and Federal licensing and reporting requirements for child care centers.
General bookkeeping including payroll and accounts payable.
Hiring practices and procedures of personnel administration and management including recruitment,
interviews, discipline, employee evaluation, and termination.
Rules, procedures, and activities of the Center.
Basic principles of supervision and training.
Modern office methods, practices and procedures including proficient use of Microsoft programs, various
email platforms and social media sites.
Playground safety, water safety, and first aid methods, as applicable to various programs.
Proper English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
And Ability to:
Plan, organize, and implement Center programs.
Provide supervision and support to staff including supervising daily duties, performance feedback, and
keep teachers and staff informed of current program information.
Provide teachers and staff information for professional development opportunities.
Facilitate monthly staff and Board meetings including posting and efficient dissemination of materials.
Maintain records and prepare various report using current software programs utilized in a standard office
setting.
Prepare publicity brochures and material.
Effectively represent the Center’s services and functions with interested individuals and organizations. Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical
language.
Understand and follow oral and/or written instructions, policies and procedures.
Operate or quickly learn to operate a personal computer using software applications appropriate to
assigned tasks; as applicable.
Use logical thinking and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written directions or
oral instructions.
Quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information
and/or technology.
Act with integrity, ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.
