Job Description
Under the supervision of a Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisor) the Agricultural Technician I (Seasonal) is responsible for participating in basic activities which pertain to the prevention and spread of Piece’s Disease and the Glassy-winged sharpshooter in the Pierce’s Disease Control Program of the California Department of Food and Agriculture.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Prioritize and establish work routines in order to deploy insect traps in commercial citrus areas and among other selected crops. Utilize a state vehicle throughout the territory to monitor GWSS activity.
Using a state vehicle, inspect insect traps bi-weekly for detection of GWSS and other pests, as needed, in a designated territory.
Implement a variety of field survey techniques in agricultural areas (e.g. citrus orchards, vineyards, etc) using a state vehicle to effectively detect the infestation of GWSS in a timely manner.
Operate and maintain state or other program business vehicles to meet safety standards.
Operate and maintain equipment (e.g. iPhone or other electronic device) used for entering data of GWSS captured on each trap.
Document and input daily GWSS trapping data electronically in order to help identify potential infestation areas.
Recognize both GWSS and other important pests currently under quarantine or advisories.
Engage in the coordination of the monitoring and sampling program through surveys within a variety of designated areas in croplands, residential, and natural habitat.
Collect, document, and follow the proper chain of custody for insect specimens to be sent to the CDFA Plant Diagnostics Center for identification.
Request purchase of equipment and materials for GWSS trapping operations.

Special Requirements
The position(s) require(s) a valid California Driver’s License (CDL). You must answer the questions addressing your CDL on your application. Ensure you provide your CDL number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions.
One season of experience (approximately three months) in growing, harvesting, grading, packing, sorting, loading, buying, selling, or inspecting fruits, vegetables, or other agricultural commodities; or the inspection and certification of livestock; or in virus, animal/plant pest, or disease eradication and control work in the field or laboratory; the inspection of fruit trees for presence of viruses; environmental monitoring; biological control or pest management work including pest and pesticide sampling and rearing of pests, landscape maintenance or
nursery operations work, or other agricultural work.
(Completion of a one-semester college course in one or more agricultural subjects, such as plant or animal science, botany, entomology, zoology, physical science, biology, chemistry, or ornamental horticulture; or one year of general college work may be substituted for the required experience where the education is applicable to the program area.)

Working Conditions
The duties of this position are primarily conducted outdoors at a variety of field and nursery locations, including unpaved roads and private property throughout the state under various types of weather conditions. Incumbents may be required to work with pesticides. Travel by State vehicle to various locations throughout the state may be required. The incumbent must maintain a good driving record.
